HISTORY OF INNOVATION
Wyvern Organs is a proudly British company whose spirit of innovation stretches back to the early 1950s.
It was then that Kenneth Burge, a gifted young electronics engineer with a passion for music, began developing some of the earliest electronic organ designs. In 1959, he opened his first factory, laying the foundations for what would become one of Britain’s most respected organ builders.
At the same time, Arthur Lord — distinguished theatre organist and BBC broadcaster — was independently researching tone generation alongside Leslie Bourn, Technical Director of the John Compton Organ Company. Their shared pursuit of tonal realism would later play a pivotal role in Wyvern’s development.
In 1966, Kenneth Burge formally established Wyvern Organs and soon invited Arthur Lord to join him. Together, they pioneered major advances in analogue organ technology.
Among their most influential innovations were: Diode-keying, eliminating unwanted key-click and “Graduated Frequency Attack”, enabling natural variation in note attack. These breakthroughs were widely adopted around the world and helped redefine expectations of electronic organ performance. In 1982, Wyvern introduced another landmark development: the Wyvern ST60, the world’s first dual-specification organ — a revolutionary concept that allowed players to access more than one tonal design within a single instrument.
Wyvern’s expertise was further recognised in 1977 when the National Research & Development Corporation invited the company to assess and engineer the groundbreaking Bradford computing organ system.
This pioneering digital tone generation system was widely praised for its realism and installed in several significant venues, including four British cathedrals — marking an important milestone in the evolution of digital organ technology.
Continuing the tradition from early analogue innovation to advanced digital systems, Wyvern has remained dedicated to the principle: Authentic sound, engineered with precision.
Today more than seventy years after those first experiments in electronic tone generation, the company continues to build instruments that combine British tonal heritage with forward-thinking technology.
OUR VISION
It was against this innovative background that two brilliant engineers who had a vision of a new tone generator system approached Wyvern. Although our brief was to turn this into a stable and reliable platform, it soon became apparent that this design allied to powerful processors, took sound sampling technology far further than previously achieved and we adapted a version for all custom built Wyverns. Today a derivative of this system is wildly used in all our standard instruments enabling full flexibility in their voicing.
THE WYVERN TEAM
Behind Wyvern is a group of seasoned professionals with decades of experience. Together, we are dedicated in helping you find the perfect organ.
